Bridgette Varin tied a UAA record by scoring four goals in a 5-1 victory over Brandeis at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Saturday.
Her four-goal one-game output nearly matches her total scored in all of 2007. It ties the exisiting University Athletic Association record set by Alison Collins of Rochester in 2001.
Ellen Coleman had three assists. Mae Butler had one. The fifth Rochester goal was scored by Jessica Blum, assisted by Jessica Smith and Brittany Huber.
The Brandeis goal was scored by Melissa Gorenkoff at 77:53. She drove a 35-yard blast from left wing to the top left corner of the goal, out of the reach of Shannon Alderfer.
Celeste Hornbach played the first 73:13 in goal for Rochester. She was not required to make a save. Alderfer played the last 16:47. She made one save.
Hillary Rosenzweig played the same time as Hornbach. She made three saves. Jaclyn Weinstein replaced her for the last 16:47.
Varin opened the scoring at 12:51. Coleman pushed the ball to the right and Varin cranked a 15-yarder to the low left corner. Brandeis nearly equalized 35 minutes into the half. Tiffany Pacheo whistled a 20-yarder just over the crossbar.
At 49:58, Butler's free kick from left wing was headed to the right corner by Varin who made a nice diagonal run through the box. At 60:47, Coleman broke through and fired for the left corner. Rosenzweig parried it. The ball fell to Varin who knocked it into the net.
The record-tying goal came on a breakaway at 66:03. Coleman provided the pass to send Varin behind the defense.
Blum scored her goal after tapped passes from Smith and Huber at the top of the area.
Rochester is 1-0 in the UAA, 7-1-2 overall. Brandeis is 0-1, 6-3-1 overall.
