Visiting Chicago scored on a rebound with 5:35 left in the second sudden death overtime period and defeated Rochester, 2-1, in women's soccer on Sunday afternoon.
The Maroons strengthened their hold on third place in the University Athletic Association race. Chicago is 4 -2 in the UAA, 11-5-1 overall. Rochester is 2-4 in the UAA, 10-5-2 overall. Three of Rochester's four league defeats have come in double OT.
Rochester took a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute. Bridgette Varin took a shot from deep in the penalty area. It was blocked by Chicago's goalkeeper, Polly Cline. The rebound was driven into the net from eight yards out by Erin Carballo.
Chicago got even with 11:01 left in the second half. Sigrid Nachtergaele played a corner kick into the box. Anne Scherer's low shot was blocked by Celeste Hornbach in heavy traffic and Claire Gill scored from four yards away.
The winning goal was started again by Nachtergaele. She played a long ball from right wing that struck the juncture of the crossbar and left post. The ball bounced off the metal to Claire Denz who pushed it in front of goal and Brooke Bontz scored into an open net.
Celeste Hornbach made four saves for Rochester. Cline had four stops for the Maroons.
