Ithaca Pulls Away in Resler Final

Tournament MVP Sean Burton scored a game-high 22 points, had six assists, and three steals to lead unbeaten Ithaca to an 81-72 victory over the University of Rochester in the championship game of the Chuck Resler Tournament at the Palestra.

Chris Cruz scored 21 points for the Bombers, including four three-point goals. He was named to the All-Tournament team.

Mike Labanowski led Rochester with a career-high 19 points. Freshman Nate Novosel had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Mike Chmielowiec scored 16. Labanowski and Chmielowiec represented Rochester on the All-Tournament Team.

Ithaca improved to 4-0 and has topped 80 points in every game this year. Rochester is 1-1.

In an even first half, the Yellowjackets used a 7-0 run to move in front, 29-22, with 7:15 left. Chmielowiec hit two free throws, Novosel sank a jumper in the paint, and Labanowski sank a three-point goal. Another three-pointer by Labanowski got the lead up to eight, 34-26. Ithaca went on a 16-2 run with Brendan Rogers hitting three three-pointers to build a 42-36 lead with 1:35 left in the half. It was 45-39 at halftime.

With Rochester down by 11 early in the second period, Labanowski and William Serve hit three-pointers around a driving layup by Max Kaplan to get within 50-47 in the first six minutes.

Rochester pulled within two points, 66-64, on a three-pointer by Kaplan with 6:04 left. Cruz hit back to back threes, stretching Ithaca's lead to 72-64. Burton sank four free throws in the last 35 seconds to nail down the win.

Labanowski hit seven of 12 from the floor, five of seven outside the arc. Novosel made seven of 10 floor shots and all four of his free throws in 36 minutes. Kaplan scored eight points and handed out 10 assists for the second straight game.

Ithaca tied a Palestra record with 32 three-point attempts (making 11). Cruz hit four of nine. Rogers made three of five, Burton two of eight, and Jordan Marcus two of four. The original mark of 32 was set by Hamilton College in 1992 against Rochester.

The Yellowjackets start a run of Empire 8 opponents. Rochester hosts Nazareth at 7 pm Tuesday and Elmira College at 8 pm Saturday in the first round of the Holiday Inn Airport Thanksgiving Invitational.
