Max Kaplan sank three of four free throw attempts in the last 21 seconds as Rochester held off Lycoming College, 63-59, in the second round of the UR/Holiday Inn Airport Invitational at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
They were the only points of the game for Kaplan who finished with seven assists and three steals. Rochester led by as much as 16, but saw the Warriors pull within one point, 52-51, with 7:12 left, then again, 58-57., with 1:14 to play.
The Yellowjackets improved to 4-1. Lycoming is 3-2. There was no championship game. Matchups were pre-determined.
Sebastian Sabella and Will Kelly sank two three-pointers apiece in a torrid six-minute stretch in the second half for the Warriors who made only two of seven outside the arc in the first 20 minutes.
A jumper by Rochester's Mike Labanowski gave the Yellowjackets a 16-point lead, 46-30, with 13:13 to go. Lycoming went on an extended 21-6 rally over the next six minutes. Greg Sye made two buckets, Sabella and Kelly each sank a pair of threes, and Eric Anthony hit a three-pointer. Sabella's three from the left corner (assisted by Anthony) drew Lycoming within 52-51.
Mike Chmielowiec made two free throws, then followed with a layup (56-51). Another layup, this one by Nate Novosel from Marcus Roberson, pushed Rochester ahead, 58-51, with 3:06 to go.
Sye sank two layups and Kelly finished a break with a layup from Anthony Watson to get it down to 58-57 with 1:14 left. After a Novosel layup, Kaplan made the first of two from the line with 21 seconds left. Kelly's jumper out of the right corner cut it down to 61-59 with 10.8 seconds left. Kaplan made two more free throws with nine seconds to play (63-59) and a final three-pointer was airballed.
Chmielowiec had 12 points and Roberson scored 10 in the first half which ended with Rochester ahead, 33-21. Sye and Anthony had eight points apiece in the first 20 minutes for Lycoming. The Warriors struggled to find their form, hitting eight of 24 from the floor. Rochester made 13 of 25 floor shots.
Sye led all scorers with 22 points, hitting 10 of 13 from the field. Kelly had 12 points and Anthony scored 11. Chmielowiec had 16 points and eight rebounds for Rochester. Roberson scored 15, and Labanowski had 14, 10 in the second half.
Chmielowiec was named the Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Roberson, Sye, and Kelly.
