Marcus Roberson made a layup with two seconds to play to snap a 68-all tie and carry the University of Rochester to a 70-68 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
The Tigers inbounded long to Mark Carson but the ball was tipped away by UR's Mike Chmielowiec and the final horn sounded.
Roberson, saddled with foul trouble throughout, scored 12 points. He was one of four in double figures. Chmielowiec scored 14 points. Bill Serle had 13, 11 in the second half. Max Kaplan scored 11 points, handed out 10 assists, and made five steals.
Nate Korinchak had a triple-double for RIT with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. He also had five steals. Carson scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
RIT held a commanding 35-17 advantage on the backboards. Rochester shot 58% from the field (25 of 43), 67% in the second half (16 of 24). The Yellowjackets made 10 of 20 shots from three-point range. Chmieloweic, Kaplan, and Mike Labanowski each sank three treys.
The Yellowjackets fought back from an eight-point deficit in the last three minutes. Scott Yong (14 points) hit a jumper to extend RIT's lead to 66-58 with 3:07 to play. Serle made a layup for UR and Roberson completed a traditional three-point play, pulling UR within 66-63 with 2:19 to go.
Labanowski's three-pointer from the top of the key tied the score at 66 with 1:40 left. Serle's layup put UR in front, 68-66, with 42 seconds left.
After Kaplan missed two free throws at 0:20, Korinchak made two foul shots for the Tigers, tying the score at 68 with 10.8 seconds left. Kaplan rushed through the defense and got the ball to Roberson who drove the right side for the layup.
RIT took advantage of some cold shooting and sloppy ballhandling by UR in the early minutes. The Tigers led, 12-0, six minutes into the half and built the lead to 19-6 with 11:31 left.
Kaplan hit three three-point goals in a span of 1:43 to even the score at 30-30 with 1:33 left in the half. Shawn Roe's three-pointer put RIT ahead at halftime. The Yellowjackets opened the second half on a 9-1 run, taking a 39-34 lead on Chmielowiec's three-pointer with 17:39 left. Korinchak scored four points in a 9-2 RIT run that pushed the Tigers ahead, 43-41.
