CMU Edges Men in UAA Opener

PITTSBURG, PA - Carnegie Mellon, ranked 19th nationally, staged a late rally to edge Rochester, 58-55, in the UAA men's basketball opener for both teams at Skibo Gym.

The Tartans improved to 7-0 overall, 1-0 in the UAA. Rochester had a four-game winning streak snapped. The Yellowjackets are 5-2 overall, 0-1 in the UAA.

Terence Bouldin-Johnson made a conventional three-point play with 2:52 to play to put the Tartans ahead for the first time, 55-54. Mike Chmielowiec made one free throw for Rochester to tie iot with 2:13 left, but CMU went back in front, 56-55, on one of two from the line by Matthew Pettit with 1:59 left.

After an exchange of turnovers, Chmielowiec's driving layup fell off the rim with 53 seconds to go. Carnegie ran down the clock before Shane Rife missed a jumper. Casey O'Rourke rebounded the miss, was fouled by David Gould, and sank both ends of a one-and-one with 11 seconds to go.

Rochester shot 57% from the floor in the first half, including five of nine outside the arc, to open a 37-32 lead at the half. The Yellowjacket shooting turned cold in the second 20 minutes as Rochester sank just five of 18 from the floor.

Chmielowiec led all scorers with 24 points, 15 in the first half. Nate Novosel had 12 points, 10 in the first half. The Yellowjackets led by as much as seven in the second period, the last time at 50-43 on Gould's jumper with 12:21 left.

Jack Anderson's layup got CMU within 52-51 with 6:36 to go. Novosel canned two free throws for a 54-51 lead (5:17 left). Anderson made the back end of two two minutes later, pulling the hosts within 54-52.

Ryan Einwag stole the ball from Chmielowiec and that led to Bouldin-Johnson's layup and free throw that put the home side ahead for the first time.

Einwag led the Tartans with 18 poitns, Bouldin-Johnson had 14, and Anderson scored 11.
