The men's soccer team scored a goal on each side of halftime and went on to a 2-0 victory over Nazareth College at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Tuesday night.
Phil Proud put the Yellowjackets in front at 42:21 when he scored on a penalty kick. The first half was a battle of the defenses. The Yellowjackets were able to take nine shots, five of which were on goal. Rochester's defense kept Nazareth out of shooting range in the first 45 minutes.
The second half was a similar story of each midfield lineup looking for control. Nine minutes into the second half, Rochester's Misha Carrel-Thomas hit a drive to the top left corner, but it struck the crossbar. Sean Hantes tried three minutes later with a header that again hit off the crossbar from a pass by J.J. Dennstedt. Carrel-Thomas and Dennstedt formed a successful combo with just over 20 minutes left. Carrel-Thomas passed to Dennstedt for a header to the top right corner, improving the lead to 2-0 at 69:44.
Nazareth's goalie, Ryan Platt played all 90 minutes of the game. He made seven saves. Yellowjacket goalies Michael Peacock and Brandon Campbell shared the action in the goal. Peacock played the first 76 minutes to pick up his fourth win this season and Campbell finished the last 14 minutes.
Rochester is 4-0-2 and hosts Hobart College on Saturday at 1:30 pm. The teams met twice last season. Hobart won the first match, 1-0, in Geneva. Rochester won in the second round of the NCAAs. The Statesmen are ranked in the top 10 nationally in this week's Division III poll. Rochester is ranked No. 24.
