Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Proud's PK Beats Houghton

Phil Proud scored on a penalty kick with 19 minutes to play to snap a 1-1 tie and carry the Univerity of Rochester to a 2-1 men's soccer victory over Houghton College at Fauver Stadium.

The gamewinning kick was awarded after Sean Hantes was dragged down in the box as he raced into the penalty area on right wing. It was a frustrating night for Hantes: he hit a six-yard blast off the left post 10 minutes into what became a very physical match. Later, Houghton goalkeeper Erik Lefebvre made a sparkling save to deny Hantes again.

Proud drove his gamewinner into the lower right hand corner, beyond the dive of Lefebvre. The Yellowjackets had a chance to extend the lead, but were denied when Dominic Pellingra's 25-yard free kick from right wing struck the juncture of the left post and the crossbar.

Rochester goalkeeper Brandon Campbell made five saves in the second half, none more important than the one he grabbed on an eight-yard shot from Dan Brubaker in the dying seconds of the match. Houghton pressure resulted in a corner kick with 40 seconds left (only the second Highlander corner of the match). The ball found its way into the goalmouth and bounced off half a dozen players before Brubaker got to it, eased his way free and fired low for the center of the net. Campbell caught it, let the box clear, and kicked the ball to midfield where the match ended.

The Yellowjackets took a 1-0 lead at 34:11. Timmer McCarthy played the ball down left wing to J.J. Dennstedt. He outpaced a defender and sent a crossfield pass to Steve Welles streaking towards net on right wing. Welles first-timed a low shot into the left hand corner of the net.

Houghton pressed in the second half and got even at 68:07. The Highlanders were awarded a free kick straight out from 30 yards away. Steve Grudda hit it straight at net. Campbell made a good reaction save to knock it down. Brubaker got to the rebound first and scooped it over Campbell into the open net, tying the score.

With the win, Rochester improved to 5-1-2. The Yellowjackets are idle for six days – until they play at RIT on September 30. Houghton is 4-4.
