Eighth-ranked SUNY Cortland scored twice in the last three minutes to ensure a 3-0 field hockey victory over the University of Rochester at Fauver Stadium.
The Red Dragons improved to 2-0. Rochester is 1-1. The Yellowjackets defeated SUNY Geneseo, 3-1, at Fauver Stadium on Monday.
Rochester's defense held off the Dragons in a first half that did not provide that many scoring opportunities on either side. Cortland took three shots and its two best chances came on passes that were just wide. Christine McCabe skimmed two passes through the penalty area and the Dragons were not able to convert either chance.
Cortland broke through in the 50th minute. After a fourth straight penalty corner, Christine McCabe slipped the ball from the right side of the arc to Katie Johnson and she drove it waist high into the net at 49:16.
With 2:30 to play, Melissa Smith fed Johnson and she placed a low liner into the left hand corner of the goal. Kristin McGurl completed the Cortland scoring, tapping home a goalline feed from Kayla Chambers with 30 seconds to play.
Rochester goaltender Danielle Pearson made 11 saves for the Yellowjackets in her second varsity start. Stacy Billings earned the shutout for Cortland, her second this year.
Rochester hosts Elmira College (1 pm Saturday) and the College of Wooster (1 pm Sunday) this weekend.
