Visiting Clarkson University made two key defensive plays in the first overtime period and those played important roles as the Knights and Rochester tied 0-0 in double overtime at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
With five minutes left in the first extra period, J.J. Dennstedt was taken down in the box creating a penalty kick opportunity. Sean Hantes took the kick, but his drive for the top right corner was batted over the crossbar by Clarkson goalie, Mike St. Croix. Two minutes later, Misha Carrel-Thomas headed a shot to the left corner that was cleared off the line by Clarkson's Justin White.
The Yellowjackets surged forward in the second half and created a lot of corner kick opportunities but could not cash in. At the other end of the field, Rochester goalkeeper Michael Peacock was able to shut down the Golden Knights and produced two big saves. The first save was in the 54th minute when he stopped a shot by Clarkson's Andrew Ensinger from the top of the box. Peacock came up big again in the 88th minute, this time on a drive from Scott Desmond.
Clarkson senior Seni Makinde had to be helped off the field with 2:34 left in regulation after injuring his leg and did not return to the game.
Dennstedt came close in the 61st minute with a shot chipped over the bar, and again in the 70th minute when he collected a cross from Sean Hantes to shoot just over the bar. Three minutes later, Dennstedt sent an off-balance shot skimming past the left upright.
The Yellowjackets came forward again in the second overtime but a Dennstedt close in shot flew just over the woodwork with three minutes left. With two minutes remaining, Jeremy Gaden chipped the ball from outside the penalty arc and it struck the crossbar.
St. Croix collected seven saves and earned his first shutout of the season. For Rochester, Peacock posted his fourth straight shutout and 10th of his career.
