Two Career Highs Lead Win Over NYU

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Mike Chmielowiec and Mike Labanowski combined for 53 points, including 10 three-pointers, to lead the University of Rochester to a 79-68 victory over New York University at the Coles Sports Center.

The win boosts Rochester's record to 9-2 overall, 2-1 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester is tied with Carnegie Mellon in the UAA standings. The Tartans lost at Brandeis on Sunday afternoon. Washington and Case are both 1-0 in the UAA. NYU is 9-2, 0-2 UAA.

Chmielowiec scored a career high 32 points including five three point goals. He hit 12 of 17 from the floor, five of eight outside the arc. He added five rebounds and three steals.

Labanowski also scored a career high, getting 21 points. He made 7 of 14 from the floor, 5 of 11 outside the arc. He added four assists and six rebounds.

Freshman Bill Serle contributed 13 points, all in the first half. It matches Serle's season high. Marcus Robertson had seven point and seven rebounds. Nate Novosel had six points. He was limited to 17 minutes of play due to foul trouble. Max Kaplan had eight assists.

John Mish led the Violets with 16 points and 11 rebounds. D.J. Glavan and Omar Meziab scored 13 each. Richie Polan had 12.

A three-point play by Serle and Labanowski's three-point field goal gave Rochester its largest lead of the first half, 25-18, with 5:59 left. NYU battled back, eventually taking a one-point lead on Chip Borsi's layup and free throw (30-29, 3:25). Labanowski followed with another trey 19 seconds later. Rochester led, 35-33, at halftime.

Chmielowiec scored 24 points in the second half. Rochester stretched its lead to 13, 60-47, on back to back layups from Novosel, assisted by John Charlesworth. Mish scored four points in a 10-0 NYU flurry that got the Violets within three, 60-57, with 8:12 left.

Polan's second three-point field goal kept the Violets within five, 67-62, with 4:07 left. Chmielowiec answered with a three, then made a layup, to put Rochester ahead, 72-62 with 3:01 to play.

Chmielowiec's previous career high was 25 points, which he did three times this year – including Friday night at Brandeis in a 73-69 Rochester victory. Labanowski's previous high was 19 points, scored on November 22 against Ithaca.
