Second Half Rally Sparks Men to Win

Down by eight at halftime, the University of Rochester used a 17-2 spurt over the first 6:19 of the second half to take command enroute to a 70-60 victory over the University of Chicago at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

Five players contributed to the run. Mike Chmielowiec scored six of the points on consecutive three-point shots. Nate Novosel had four points. Chmielowiec, who missed the last two games with a foot injury, returned to the starting lineup and led Rochester with 18 points. Bill Serle scored 14 in 20 minutes off the bench. Marcus Roberson had 11 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. The Yellowjackets improved to 12-4 overall, 3-2 in the University Athletic Association. They are tied for third place with Carnegie Mellon, one game behind Brandeis and two behind third-ranked Washington.

Rochester pulled within three several times, the last at 31-28 on a Chmielowiec jumper with 4:22 remaining. Kinsella made a layup and Machones drilled a trey for a 36-28 advantage at the break.

The Yellowjackets ran off eight straight to get even: Chmielowiec fed Novosel for a layup, then hit back to back three-point goals (36-36, 18:03 left). After a Kinsella layup, Novosel made a layup, John Charlesworth hit a three-pointer, Roberson hit a jumper, and Matt Murphy sank an 18 footer from right wing. It was 45-38 with 13:41 left.

Kinsella's layup trimmed the lead down to five, 47-42, with 12:38 to play. Serle made a layup, then sank a three-pointer from left of the key. Novosel's layin completed a 7-0 run (54-42) with 10 minutes to play.

The closest Chicago got after that was five, 61-56 on Kinsella's last three-point goal (6:20 remaining). Charlesworth hit a jumper, Serle canned two free throws, and Novosel made a layup to extend the lead to 67-56 with less than three minutes to play.
