Men Get Past Brandeis, 73-69

WALTHAM, Mass - Mike Chmielowiec matched his career high of 25 points for the third time this season to lead the University of Rochester to a 73-69 victory over Brandeis University at the Gosman Athletic Center.

Rochester improved to 8-2 overall and evened its record in the University Athletic Association to 1-1. Brandeis is 6-5 overall, 0-1 in the UAA.

Marcus Roberson scored 11 points for UR and Nate Novosel added 10 plus six rebounds. Max Kaplan had eight points and seven assists.

Kenny Small scored 15 points in 27 minutes off the bench for the Judges. Steve DeLuca scored 12 points and Andre Roberson - no relation to UR's Marcus - had 11 points and four assists.

Two UR substitutes - Wilson Rose and Bill Serle - hit three point goals 81 seconds apart late in the first half to key an 11-2 UR run which put the Yellowjackets ahead, 35-29 at halftime. Serle had eight points in the win. Rose, who saw his first action of the season, finished with three points and one assist.

A 7-2 Brandeis flurry put the Judges ahead, 38-37, early in the second half. UR went on an extended 19-5 run over the next 6:50 to take its largest lead, 56-43, with 10:03 to play. The run started with consecutive three-point goals by Chmielowiec, Kaplan, and Mike Labanowski. For the game, Rochester made 11 of 17 outside the arc. Six different players connected.

Small's three-point goal with 30 seconds left got Brandeis within 69-66, before Chmielowiec hit four free throws in the last 25 seconds to seal it.
