Bridgette Varin scored the game's only goal with 17 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to power the University of Rochester women's soccer team past visiting Emory University under the lights of Fauver Stadium.
In a game dominated by defenses, it was the Yellowjacket offense that made the biggest play of the night. With the first overtime period nearly under wraps, Meaghan Magee sent a lead pass from midfield in the direction of a streaking Varin. The pass slipped past an Emory defender, leaving the speedy forward one on one with Emory goalie Kirsten Baecher. The game winner was Varin's fifth goal of the season.
Both teams battled through 90 minutes without any real threatening attacks. The Yellowjacket defense held Emory to one shot on goal in just under 100 minutes of play. Emory's only shot of the game came midway through overtime when Olivia Lezanski sent a blast from outside the box, forcing Rochester goalie Celeste Hornbach to make a full extension save.
Corner kicks (2-2) and shots (6-6) were identical between the two teams. Celeste Hornbach earned her sixth solo shoutout of the season for the Yellowjackets.
Rochester, ranked number ten in the nation according to the latest NSCAA/Adidas division III soccer poll, will return to action on Sunday at 1:30 pm when then they host Carnegie Mellon for Senior Day at Fauver Stadium.
