Ellen Coleman scored with less than two minutes to play in the first half and Bridgette Varin tacked on the game winner in the second half as the University of Rochester women's soccer team defeated Carnegie Mellon 2-1 on senior day.
Coleman put the Yellowjackets on the board first when Marissa Braverman sent a deep ball into the center of the box. Coleman ran underneath it and, with a defender on her back, headed it over the top of Tartan goalie Anya Rosen. The goal was a team best ninth for Coleman.
Bridgette Varin, who scored the overtime winner against Emory University on Friday, added an insurance goal in the 54th minute. Bridget Kehm took control of a loose ball at the top of the box and played it left to Varin. The junior forward turned to her left and fired a right footed shot into the upper 90. Varin's sixth goal of the season would stand as the eventual game winner.
With less than ten minutes to play, Rochester had an opportunity to stretch the lead when Coleman's shot was denied by the right post.
Carnegie Mellon's Katie Davis scored a late goal (84th minute) off a corner kick from Emily Overstreet.
Celeste Hornbach made two saves to earn the win. The Yellowjackets improve to 12-3-2 overall and 5-1-0 in the UAA. They trail only Washington University (5-0-1) in the conference.
Rochester will travel to Cleveland, Ohio next weekend to take on Case Western Reserve University in the final regular season game for both teams.
