ATLANTA - Emory University used a 57-point second half to rally for an 83-74 victory over Rochester in men's basketball at the Woodruff PE Center.
The loss drops Rochester's record to 13-5 overall, 4-3 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester is tied with Carnegie Mellon for third place in the UAA standings. Washington leads at 7-0. Brandeis is second at 5-2. Rochester and Carnegie are 4-3. Case is 3-4, NYU and Chicago 2-5, and Emory 1-6.
The Yellowjackets were led by Mike Chmielowiec who scored 20 points. Colin Cubit scored 18 and hit four of five three-point attempts. Marcus Roberson and Nate Novosel had 11 points apiece. John Charlesworth contributed eight off the bench. Max Kaplan had eight assists, boosting his season's total to 127.
Dan Curtin led Emory (6-12, 1-6 UAA) with 22 poins. Austin Claunch scored 13. Chad Hixon had 11, and Eric Panicco scored 10. The Eagles hit 26 of 51 field goal attempts (51%). Rochester made 22 of 48 (45.8%).
A jumper in the lane by Cubit just 2:11 into the second half gave Rochester a 40-29 lead. It was still 10, 44-34, with 16:04 to go after Serle made a pair of free throws. Emory nibbled at the lead and Rochester needed one free throw from Novosel to tie the score at 60-60 with 8:24 left.
Cubit's three-pointer at 7:33 put Rochester back in front, 64-62. Anthony Fernandez made one free throw for Emory, then drove for a layup shortly thereafter, putting the Eagles ahead to stay, 65-64, with 5:52 to go.
Claunch scored five of his points in a 10-3 run over three minutes to put Emory firmly in front. He sank a three-pointer for a 68-64 lead. After a layup by Panicco and a three-pointer from Chmielowiec made it 70-67, Claunch hit a scoop shot for a five-point spread (72-67).
Emory made 11 of 12 free throws in the final 2:33 to seal the win. Hixon was six of six and Claunch four of four.
For the game, Emory hit 26 of 30 free throws. Rochester made 22 of 30.
Last year, Emory defeated Rochester in overtime, giving the Yellowjackets their first loss of the season and knocking them from the number one spot in the D3hoops.com poll.
The teams meet again in five days when Emory comes to the Palestra.
