Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chmielowiec's Career Night Sparks Win

Mike Chmielowiec scored a career high 36 points to lead the University of Rochester to a 73-65 victory over Emory University at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

He hit 10 of 18 from the floor, four of 10 outside the arc, and 12 of 15 free throws. He had 24 points by halftime, helping UR to a 36-28 lead at the break.

Chmielowiec surpassed the 1,000-point career mark on two free throws with 8:08 left in the first half to give the Yellowjackets (5-3 UAA, 14-5) a 23-16 lead. He is the 24th men's player to top 1,000 career points. With his 36 points, he has 1,020 points and stands 22nd overall in scoring.

Marcus Roberson had 11 points and nine rebounds for UR. Nate Novosel scored 11 points as well. Max Kaplan handed out seven assists.

Anthony Fernandez led Emory (1-7 UAA, 6-13) with 19 points in 24 minutes off the bench. Alex Gulotta scored 11 points, including three three-point goals.

Five points from Fernandez helped chop a 15-point first half deficit down to six, 34-28, in the last 75 seconds of the first half. Chmielowiec's jumper with 0:06 left made it an eight-point game at the break (36-28).

The Yellowjackets pushed the second half lead to 17 twice, the last time on one free throw by Roberson with 11:45 left (54-37). Emory crept back slowly, getting as close as six, 64-58, on a layup by Fernandez with 2:58 to play. Rochester made nine free throws in the last minute to hold off the visitors.

Emory was partially undone by its own foul shooting. The Eagles, who made 26 of 30 free throws in a victory over Rochester five days ago in Atlanta, sank just five of 16 from the line. Rochester hit 29 of 38. Roberson was nine of 12 and Chmielowiec 12 of 15.

Chmielowiec's total of 36 points is tied for the seventh highest point total in one game by a Rochester player. It's the highest single-game total for a Rochester player in seven years – since Seth Hauben scored 39 points vs. Elizabethtown in the 2002 Final Four.
