John Mish scored a career high 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead visiting New York University to an 86-72 victory over the University of Rochester at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
Richie Polan added 19 points for the Violets while D.J. Glavan scored 11 and handed out four assists. NYU (3-7 University Athletic Association, 14-7 overall) broke a four-game losing streak.
Mike Chmielowiec led Rochester with 30 points and Nate Novosel scored 11. UR is 6-4 in the UAA, 15-6 overall.
Glavan and Chip Borsi hit back to back three pointers to put NYU ahead for good, 25-20 with 8:31 left in the half. UR cut a six-point deficit down to three five times, the last on Derrick Fetzer's layup with 3:15 left in the period (40-37). Glavan hit another three and Mish made a layup to key an 11-4 run over the last 2:13. NYU led, 51-41, at halftime.
Chmielowiec scored six straight points as part of an 8-0 run midway through the second half that got UR within 65-59 with 10:02 to play.
NYU shot 52.6% from the floor for the game (30-57) and 47.8% outside the arc (11 of 23). Polan was perfect, hitting all six of his floor shots, including 3-3 on three point tries. Five Violets made at least two three-point shots apiece.
For Rochester, the Yellowjackets hit 48% for the game (24-50), 38.5% in the second half (10-26). It was Chmielowiec's third 30-point game this season. He had 32 in UR's win at NYU in January and scored a career high 36 last Friday in a victory over Emory. He is 17th in career scoring. Max Kaplan had nine assists for UR, raising his season's total to 150 and his career total to 357. He is ninth in career assists.
