Steve DeLuca scored 17 points to lead five players in double figures as visiting Brandeis University defeated the University of Rochester, 80-63, at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
DeLuca finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals, and one blocked shot in 31 minutes. He surpassed the 1,500-career point mark midway through the first half. Kevin Olseon scored 16 points for Brandeis. Andre Roberson had 13 points while Kenny Small and Terrell Hollins had 12 apiece. The Judges improved to 14-8 overall, 7-4 in the University Athletic Association. Brandeis is tied for second place with Carnegie Mellon.
Mike Chmielowiec led Rochester with 18 points. Colin Cubit scored 13, including three three-point field goals. Nate Novosel had nine points. Point guard Max Kaplan had seven assists. Rochester is 15-7 overall, 6-5 in the UAA. The Yellowjackets sit in fourth place in the association standings.
DeLuca scored seven straight points over a 2:29 span of the first half to push the Judges in front, 31-22, with 7:41 left. Chmielowiec answered with seven points in a 9-2 Rochester run that pulled the Yellowjackets within 33-31 in the next two minutes. Brandeis led, 43-41, at halftime.
Another three-pointer by Chmielowiec kept Rochester within four, 55-51, five minutes into the second half. Olson and Small hit back to back threes, upping the lead to 10, 61-51. Hollins sank a jumper before Cubit's three-pointer drew Rochester within nine at 63-54.
A Hollins layup and eight straight points by Olson broke the visitors lead out to 73-54 with less than eight minutes to play.
Second place in the UAA standings is up for grabs. Washington University clinched the league title by winning at Case Western Reserve. The Bears are 11-0 with three left. Carnegie and Brandeis both have four losses. Rochester has five. The Yellowjackets play at Chicago on Friday, then go to Washington next Sunday.
