Blivin's Late Goal Lifts Rochester Over Fisher

Chris Blivin's first career goal broke a scoreless tie with just over one minute remaining in the game as host University of Rochester defeated St. John Fisher College 1-0 in the season opener for both teams. All-American J.J. Dennstedt fed Blivin for the game winner at 88:49, which slipped just underneath a diving Adam Durst.

The Yellowjackets, ranked 18th in the preseason coaches' poll, had a number of opportunities to break the game open in the second half. Five minutes in, a cross from Steve Welles found Dennstedt's head. The ball trickled past Durst but was stopped by the left post. One minute later, Scott Cady found Dennstedt alone, but an offside call erased the goal. Later in the half, Scott Zorn found himself one on one with Durst, but a shot rolled wide of the net.

Durst, who kept the Cardinal's in the game throughout, made consecutive point blank saves in the first half on a Rochester shot and rebound. Durst finished with five saves and was tested on numerous occasions. Fisher's strong defensive effort was also paced by junior Andrew McIntosh and freshman Austin Buckley.

The Cardinal offense was slowed by strong defensive performances by senior keeper Michael Peacock (two saves) and senior back Phil Proud. The Cardinal's best opportunity to score came in the second half when Luke Lennox found Matt Guinto open at the top of the box, but his shot sailed wide of its target.

Both teams will be featured in this weekend's Flower City Classic. On Saturday, the Cardinals will face SUNY Cortland at 4 pm while the Yellowjackets take on SUNY Oswego at 7 pm.
