FREDONIA, N.Y. - Sophomore striker Ellen Coleman headed in a cross from Marissa Braverman late in the first sudden death overtime as Rochester edged Penn State Behrend, 1-0.
The victory was the 400th career win for Rochester head coach Terry Gurnett. He is in his 33rd season coaching the Yellowjackets and leads all Division III women's soccer coaches in wins.
Rochester's win came in the first round of the Clarion Hotel Soccer Classic at SUNY Fredonia. Rochester will play St. Lawrence in the second round on Saturday. The Yellowjackets are 3-0-1 overall. Penn State-Behrend is 3-1.
Coleman's goal ended a game of steady pressure on the PSU goal. The Yellowjackets outshot the Lions, 25-5, including 12-0 in the first half. PSU goalkeeper Frost Kayla made 14 saves in 99:34. Rochester's Celeste Hornbach had three saves.
Coleman was the Rookie of the Year in the University Athletic Association in 2008. The goal was her third of the season.
