Amanda Case scored in a flurry after a penalty corner with all zeros on the clock and Rochester defeated 18th-ranked William Smith, 2-1, in field hockey at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Rochester won a penalty corner in the closing seconds of the game. Case played the ball out of the corner to Christi Bottcher at the top of the circle. She moved inside the arc but her hard shot was blocked. The ball bounced free in the crease with players fighting for control. It came to Case at the left side of the net and she put it into the cage.
The win is Rochester's first victory in the Liberty League this season. The Yellowjackets are 4-5 overall, 1-2 in the Liberty League. William Smith is 6-3 overall, 0-3 in the Liberty League. Both the Yellowjackets and Herons lost twice apiece last weekend at St. Lawrence and Hamilton.
Rochester goaltender Danielle Pearson produced 15 saves - a season's high, and three short of matching her career high (18 at Brockport last season). Sarah Dixon and Darragh Kerr had defensive saves for Rochester.
William Smith outshot the Yellowjackets, 22-6, and held a 14-6 advantage on penalty corners. Taryn Little had three saves in the Heron cage.
Janelle Walkley put William Smith ahead in the first minute of play. The Herons earned two straight penalty corners and the second one paid off on the scoreboard. Kiersten Hamilton played the ball outside the arc to Kaitlyn Hamilton. She chipped it away to Walkley who went around a Rochester defender and fired the ball past Pearson.
Rochester evened it at 9:47. The Yellowjackets got the ball deep into the Heron crease and Kyra Pinsky was eventually able to steer it past Little to make the score 1-1.
With 11 minutes left in the first half, the Herons unleashed a siege on the Rochester goal. Pearson made two saves, Dixon had a defensive save, and Pearson blocked another shot out of bounds.
Little made two good saves with just over two minutes left in the first half. Case tried a tough angle on the left side, just outside the post. That was blocked by Little. Allison Beardsley tried to stuff the rebound home, but Little got down to block it.
