Ellen Coleman's blast from the top of the box with just over 15 minutes left in the game gave UR its second-consecutive win over a top-25 team as the Yellowjackets topped the 24th-ranked University of Chicago Maroons, 1-0, on a rainy, windy night game at Fauver Stadium.
The Maroons came into the game on top in the UAA, holding a 2-0 record and a 7-3-1 record overall. The Yellowjackets, meanwhile, entered the game ranked in the top 25 in the country for the first time this season, sitting at 25th, and with a 1-1 record (8-3-1 overall).
Defense was on display for most of the game. Chicago came into the match having allowed only seven goals on the season. UR had three shutouts and has only allowed more than one goal once this year. This, along, with poor weather made for some tough conditions for each team's offense.
UR goalie Bridget Lang had three saves in the game and the Yellowjackets cleared the ball off the line once, while the Maroons goalie Emma Gormley had five saves.
The 'Jackets finally broke through the stalemate in the 75th minute, when senior forward Bridgette Varin received a ball at the top of the 18 and was immediately crowded by two Maroon defenders. The senior played the ball off to the left, where Coleman ran onto it and hit a line drive shot into the lower left hand corner, past a diving Gormley.
The goal was Coleman's team-best 11th of the season. Varin earned her fourth assist on the year.
Both teams had a chances throughout the 90 minutes – Chicago outshot Rochester 17-7 in the game, and Maroon forward Allison Hegel almost put a couple chances in the back of the net. Her best opporuntity game with 32:30 remaining in the game, when she received a leading pass 12 yards from the Rochester goal. Before Hegel could get a shot off, however, Lang came out to meet her and was able to stop the scoring opportunity.
The save was one of a couple strong stops for Lang. In the 17th minute, Chicago Emily Benoit put a lofting cross toward goal that would have slipped past the Lang, but the Yellowjacket goalie got a hand on the ball, tipping it up and away from the goal and then catching it before anyone else had a chance to get a shot off.
In the 79th minute, Benoit almost tied the game, rocketing a free kick just outside the box on the left side of the pitch that hit the crossbar and ricocheted toward the sideline.
UR hosts Washington University on Sunday, who sits atop the UAA now after beating Case Western, 1-0, in overtime to move to 2-0-1 in the UAA.
