Rochester goalie Bridget Lang tallied three saves and Washington University goalie Clara Jacques stopped eight as the Yellowjackets and Bears battled to a 0-0 tie through 110 minutes of play on Sunday afternoon. The 'Jackets have now not allowed a goal in over 235 minutes through four games.
The Yellowjackets entered the game coming off two straight 1-0 victories against UAA opponents, while WashU, undefeated in league play, held the top spot in the UAA, having won two straight games. With the tie, UR stays in second with a 2-1-1 league record (9-3-2 overall). WashU moves to 2-0-2 (7-5-2 overall).
In the first half on Sunday, the 'Jackets put on the pressure, holding an 8-2 shot advantage. Rochester had four corners within the first 15 minutes and seven total in the first half. WashU, meanwhile, had trouble getting started, not taking a shot for the first 20 minutes of play.
UR had its best opportunity come in the 37th minute, when forward Ellen Coleman sent a cross in front of the goal from the left side of the pitch and midfielder Marissa Braverman's rising shot was just tipped high of the goal by Jacques. Jacques had three saves in the first half.
By the end of regulation, the Yellowjackets racked up a 17-5 lead and a 9-2 corner kick advantage. But WashU had a couple chances to take a lead, including Nicole Martin's blast from 30 yards out that Lang was able to tip up into the air and grab. Minutes later, the Bears Leslie Davis had a wide open goal when a cross sent in from the left side was misjudged by Lang. Davis attempted to volley the ball in, but it went just wide.
Forward Bridgette Varin was active in the second half for the 'Jackets, taking a shot at the 55th minute mark from the right side of the box that curved toward the left post, but it was poked away by a diving Jacques.
With two minutes left, another chance by Varin almost gave UR the late advantage, when she rocketed a shot toward the top right corner of the Bears's goal. However, Jacques again was there.
In the overtime periods, most opportunities came in the first 10 minutes. A shot by midfielder Becky Berels from 25 yards out went just wide of the UR goal, while UR midfielder Kathryn Rowe's blast toward the right post of the WashU goal minutes later was saved by a diving Jacques.
Rochester takes a break from league play this week, hosting St. John Fisher College next Saturday.
