Women's Soccer Comes Back to Top Fisher

Ellen Coleman scored with less than a minute to play in the first overtime period to give Rochester a 3-2 victory over St. John Fisher College at Fauver Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Coleman scored two goals and Kirsten Ross had one. The Yellowjackets battled back from 0-1 and 1-2 deficits to secure their 10th win of the season. Rochester is 10-3-2 overall. St. John Fisher is 5-10-2.

Laura Burgstrom and Alexa Capozzi had the Fisher goals. Cardinals' keeper Jessica Plukas made six saves, including a terrific one-handed punch save of a header by Elizabeth Martens just minutes after Ross equalized at 2-2.

The gamewinning play was started by Bridgette Varin. She had the ball outside the penalty area on the left side of the circle. She pushed it wide to the left and towards the endline to Martens who hit it into the goalmouth as Fisher defenders closed in. Coleman got there and sidefooted the ball under the dive of Plukas into the center of the net at 99:07. It was her 13th goal of the season and her sixth gamewinning goal.

Burgstrom put Fisher ahead at 10:52. The Cardinals were awarded a free kick along the left touchline, 25 yards off the endline. Burgstrom hit the ball on goal and it dipped below the crossbar and inside the right post from 35 yards out.

Less than 10 minutes before halftime, Rochester got even. Rachel Wesley hit a long ball upfield outside the right post. Plukas charged out and the ball got over her, landing at Coleman's feet. She took two strides to clear herself for a shot and rolled the ball into the open net.

Fisher scored another goal from distance, this one coming at 67:29. Capozzi ran one on one with a Rochester defender down the right sideline. She got to the ball first and hit it into the far left corner of the net, beyond the reach of Rochester goalkeeper Bridget Lang.

Ross tied the score at 78:31. The ball came out of the right corner to her at the middle of the pitch, 35 yards from the end line. She hit a high ball that got just under the crossbar and just over the lunge of Plukas.
