Freshman Max Fan's overtime goal just 1:15 into the extra period sealed a 2-1 victory for 20th-ranked Rochester over the previously undefeated 11th-ranked Washington University. The win was the Yellowjacket's first in its last four games and first in conference play this year, and moves them up in the UAA standings with a record of 1-1-2 (7-1-5 overall).
WashU falls to 2-1-1 (10-1-3 overall). It was the first time the Bears had given up more than one goal this season.
Fan's goal came off a throw-in on the right side of the pitch taken by defender Tom Sorrentino. Sorrentino's long ball into the box found Fan, who drilled the ball into the top shelf of the goal from 12 yards out.
In the first half, play was primarily held to the middle of the field. UR broke through in the 20th minute, when midfielder Josh Richards sent a cross to the left post that was headed past goalie Andrew Serio into the right side of the net by midfielder Steve Welles.
The goal was Welles's second of the season and his fourth point this year.
' The lead didn't hold for long, however. Just three-and-a-half minutes later, forward Kenji Kobayashi brought the score back to even. A ball was played to Kobayashi at the top of the box, who lofted the ball over the head of UR goalie Mike Moranz and into the back of the net.
The second half saw some close chances, but no scores. WashU outshot the 'Jackets 6-3 and had six corners to Rochester's two. Moranz came up with a crucial save with just under 28 minutes left when Michael Chamberlain blasted a shot toward the near post from the left side of the box, and a Patrick McLean's attempt 20 minutes later hit the post.
Moranz finished the game with three saves. Serio, who played the first half for the Bears, had three saves, and Jonathon Jebson, who played the second half, finished with two.
Rochester takes on Kean University next Sunday on the road, then returns to conference play the following weekend.
