Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Cortland Wins, 3-1, Over Field Hockey

Tenth-ranked SUNY Cortland scored three times in the first half and went on to a 3-1 victory over the University of Rochester in field hockey at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The Red Dragons used goals from three different players - Brenda Semit, Danielle Groneman, and Brianna Petronio - to build that 3-1 cushion by intermission. Katie Baragallo had the only assist. She also produced a defensive save three minutes after the opening goal that denied the Yellowjackets an equalizer. Cortland improved to 10-1 overall. Rochester is 3-6. The Yellowjackets have played three straight top 20 teams in the NFHCA poll.

Semit opened the scoring at 4:46. Barbagallo inserted a penalty corner from the left side to Semit at the top of the circle. Her blast deflected off a crowd in the goalmouth and into the upper right hand corner of the goal. Four minutes later, Rochester's Lindsey Randall had a chance at the tying goal as Hughes charged off the line. Randall's shot - with Hughes not in goal - was cleared at the low right post by Barbagallo.

Cortland made it 2-0 at 11:55. Wagner saved a shot by Brianna Yetsko and Darragh Kerr made a defensive save on a rebound try by Erin Smith. Groneman latched onto the rebound of the defensive save and slid it into the net.

Rochester broke into the scoring column at 24:36 after a penalty corner. Anisha Gundewar inserted from the left side. The ball eventually came to Beardsley as she wove along the top of the circle. When she found space, she backhanded the ball into the net under a late dive by Hughes, pulling Rochester within 2-1.

Cortland restored the two-goal margin with 2:25 left in the half. Semit fired after a penalty corner and Wagner went low to save it. Petronio scored on the rebound.

Rochester had the best scoring chance in the second period. With 8:25 left. Dobrzynski hit a hard shot from the middle of the circle that Hughes parried high to keep the lead at 3-1.
