Allison Beardsley scored 3:22 into the first sudden death overtime period to give the University of Rochester a 2-1 field hockey victory over St. Lawrence University at Edwin Fauver Stadium. She scored both Rochester goals. Kelsey Berry had the goal for St. Lawrence.
Beardsley's gamewinner gave the Yellowjackets their first Liberty League win of the season. Rochester is 1-3 in the league, 4-6 overall. It snapped a four-game losing streak for the Yellowjackets.
St. Lawrence is 2-2 in the league, 4-5 overall. On Saturday, the Saints play at William Smith which lost in overtime, 3-2, to Hamilton. Rochester hosts Hamilton Saturday.
Beardsley put the Yellowjackets ahead at 44:24 after a penalty corner. Anisha Gundewar inserted the ball from the left side. She sent it to Anna Dobrzynski who pushed it to the left where Beardsley scored from the left side of the crease.
St. Lawrence evened the score at 57:21. Erika Switz weaved her way through traffic on the left endline. Her pass into the middle of the circle found Brooke Maloney six yards out from goal. Maloney's wrister was tipped home at the right post by Berry.
The Saints had the best chance to break the tie before overtime. With less than five minutes left, Julia Croyle inserted a penalty corner to Maloney. She skimmed it back across the goalmouth to the left post, just out of the range of Michelle Laframboise on the doorstep.
Rochester piled up a handful of penalty corners in the last two minutes. The Yellowjackets finished with 16 for the match, but couldn't convert the chances into goals.
Maloney created another scoring chance for SLU just before Beardsley's gamewinner. She fed the ball into the right side of the crease where Swits' shot from six yards out sailed wide.
On the possession change, Beardsley and Shelby Hall broke down the left side of the field. Hall passed the ball into the middle. Beardsley outplayed a defender to run in alone on Saints' goaltender Nicole Matos. She slid the ball under Matos and it trickled over the line.
Matos finished with 10 saves for SLU. Madison Wagner made one save for Rochester.
