Bridgette Varin scored midway through the second half and Rochester's defense made it stand up for a 1-0 women's soccer victory at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Saturday evening.
In an evenly played match, Brandeis had more chances to get on the scoreboard in the first half and Rochester had a handful of scoring opportunities in the second 45 minutes.
Rochester's Kirsten Ross came within inches of giving the hosts the lead in the 12th minute. She hit a long shot from left wing towards the far post. Brandeis goalkeeper Francine Kofinas was partially shielded from a clear look by a strong sunlight. The ball went over her head but she reacted quickly to dive on it just before it crossed the line.
Brandeis striker Sofia Vallone hit the defensive wall on a free kick in the 17th minute and Madeline Stein's followup was saved by Rochester goalkeeper Bridget Lang. In the 21st minute, Alanna Torre hit a half volley that forced a good save at the low left post by Lang, gaining a corner kick.
Rochester broke through in the 64th minute. Varin hit a long, looping ball from deep along the left sideline. It got over the head of Kofinas and settled inside the right post. The Yellowjackets had two good chances to extend their lead. Varin had the first opportunity. She was put through by Ellen Coleman. Kofinas saved the shot into the crossbar for a corner. Ross hit the left post in the 75th minute.
