Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Scoring burst propels men in UAA finale

A flurry of offensive pressure and four different goal-scorers helped the UR men's soccer team finish its regular season on a high note on Saturday night in Fauver Stadium, taking down Case Western, 4-0, to close out its University Athletic Association schedule with a 3-2-2 record. The Yellowjackets finish the season at 10-2-5, while the Spartans drops to 10-6-3 (3-4 UAA).

UR came out with energy to start the game, notching a number of near misses through the first 45 minutes. A turnaround shot by Max Eberhardt in the second minute went just wide. Steve Welles's header in the 21st minute went just wide off a Josh Richards cross.

Less than a minute later, Jimmy Parrinello struck a ball off of a cross from point blank range, but Spartan goalie Ben Yabrow made a good diving save to preserve the stalemate, and Chris Blivin's shot off the rebound went high.

After eight shots and a number of near misses, freshman Max Fan put the Yellowjackets on the board. Defender Tom Sorrentino threw the ball into the box from the right side of the pitch, where it was headed around, eventually finding Fan, whose ensuing blast got past Yabrow into top right corner of the goal with 2:35 left in the half.

It was just Fan's second goal of the season, but also his second game winner – both coming in UAA play.

The 'Jackets almost went up by two before the first 45 minutes were up, when Eberhardt had his second near miss. Steve Welles crossed the ball into the top of the box, where Eberhardt one-timed a shot that barely missed the right post.

By the end of the half, UR held a 10-5 shot advantage and a 4-1 corner kick edge.

In the second, Blivin extended the Yellowjacket lead to two. After receiving the ball from Eberhardt at the top right side of the box, Blivin took a touch, then hit a low shot toward the bottom right corner of the goal. The ball got past Yabrow, giving UR a 2-0 lead. It was Blivin's team-best sixth goal of the season.

Welles added to the score tally in the 86th minute with finesse and a little help from Blivin. The forward drove down the right side of the pitch and crossed the ball into the box, where a streaking Welles connected mid air, volleying the ball past Yabrow for his fourth goal of the season and giving UR a commanding 3-0 lead.

Less than two minutes later, UR capped off the scoring, again off a cross from the right side. This time, it was Fan, who played a ball into the top of the box, where Jacob Findlay was waiting. Findlay's one timer off the cross got past Yabrow into the bottom right corner of the goal. It was Findlay's first goal of the season.

Yarbow was busy between the pipes for the Spartans, facing 20 shots (including eight on goal) and making four saves.

Mike Moranz, meanwhile, logged the shutout for the Yellowjackets and faced limited action. His only save came in the 77th minute, when Spartan Mark Ihan hit a rising shot from the right side of the box and Moranz had to dive to deflect the shot out of bounds.

UR's postseason fate will be determined on Monday during the NCAA's tournament selection show.
