ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Sophomore Kim Grimes continued her hot hitting by clubbing two home runs as Rochester defeated Emory, 4-3, at the UAA Championships in Florida.
The Yellowjackets fought their way back from a 3-1 deficit after three innings and evened their record at 3-3 overall. Rochester is 2-1 in the UAA. The Yellowjackets lost, 8-0, to Brandeis in their Wednesday morning game.
Lindsay Macaluso and Mary Catherine Wagner had two hits apiece for Rochester. Macaluso hit a solo shot in the first.
Sara Hutchinson, who took the loss vs. Brandeis, picked up the win in relief against Emory. Madeline Skellie started. She wriggled out of a one-out bases loaded jam in the first with a strikeout and a comebacker. In the second, Emory strung together three straight hits, the third a run-scoring double that evened the score at 1-1 (after Macaluso's HR put Rochester ahead). Hutchinson relieved. She got a comebacker and a fielder's choice that resulted in a rundown and a player out at the plate. She gave up a two-run single before retiring the cleanup hitter. After that, she gave up five hits over five innings.
Rochester got going in the third. Erin Clark struck out. Macaluso singled to right and Grimes followed with a home run to center, her second two-run shot of the tournament (she hit one vs. Case on Tuesday).
In the fifth inning, Grimes hit a solo home run to right field with two down. Wagner followed with a single, but Nikki Lee DiSalvio was caught looking.
Hutchinson let her defense do the heavy lifting in the seventh. She got three ground-ball outs: one to Brittany Hylen at third, one to Macaluso at short, and a comebacker to end it.
In the first game, Brandeis scored twice in the first, then added two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and three in the bottom of the sixth to end the game on the eight-run rule. The Yellowjackets managed four hits, two by Juliana Nicholson. Hutchinson and Skellie gave up four runs apiece.
