Kim Grimes hit a two-run home run in each game as the University of Rochester swept a softball doubleheader from St. John Fisher College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets won each game by a final score of 3-1. Grimes hit a two-run walkoff home run in the bottom of the eighth inning in game one. In the second game, she hit a two-run shot to give Rochester a 3-0 lead after three innings. She leads Rochester (10-7) with six home runs and 20 RBIs this spring.
Sara Hutchinson scattered seven hits, allowed one earned run, no walks, and struck out seven to get the win in game one. Madeline Skellie pitched six innings in game two, allowing five hits, one run (unearned), walked two, and struck out three to pick up the win. Hutchinson earned a save in the nitecap. She came on with one aboard and no outs in the seventh, then retired three straight, ending the game on a strikeout.
Danielle Leone took the loss for St. John Fisher (7-7) in the first game. She yielded six hits, three runs (two earned), walked one, and struck out three. Megan Zoerb was 2 for 4 for the Cardinals – both hits were doubles. Samantha Vara had a sacrifice fly to score the Fisher run in the third.
In game two, Sarah Stefanon allowed seven hits in six innings for Fisher. She gave up three runs, two earned, walked one, and struck out two.
Fisher took a 1-0 lead in game one. Jenn Vanek tripled with one out in the third. Vara plated her with a sacrifice fly to right. Rochester tied it with an unearned run in its half. Katie McLean singled and was sacrificed to second. Grimes hit a bouncer up the middle that glanced off Leone in the circle. McLean moved to third and when Leone threw the ball away, McLean scored and Grimes took second.
Neither team offered a serious challenge until the eighth inning. With one out, Vara singled and Zoerb doubled to right center, moving Vara to third. Hutchinson slipped a called third strike past Megan Rogers, then retired Leanne Merchant on a flyball to center.
In Rochester's half, McLean bounced out. Nikki Lee DiSalvio singled off the foot of Sara Fordyce at first. Jaclyn Inglis entered as a pinch-runner. Grimes hit a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left center to win it.
The Yellowjckets built a 3-0 lead in game two. Natalee Sassaman doubled home an unearned run in the second and Grimes hit a two-run home run in the third.
Fisher scored an unearned run in the sixth. With one out, Jamie Harman singled up the middle. Carissa Carlson reached on an error. After a flyout, Kristin McCoy and Lauren O'Brien singled, with O'Brien's hit brining home Harman.
