Softball Sweeps Skidmore in Liberty League Opener

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Rochester pitchers Madeline Skellie and Sara Hutchinson threw complete game victories - one of them a one-hitter - in a doubleheader sweep at Skidmore College.

Hutchinson pitched the one-hitter in the nitecap, a 4-0 win over the Thoroughbreds, after Skellie scattered six hits in the opener, an 8-1 win. Rochester is 17-10 overall, 2-0 in the Liberty League. Skidmore is 16-10, 0-2.

In claiming her 10th win of the season, Hutchinson faced two batters over the minimum. She set down the first 10 hitters before yielding a single through the right side in the bottom of the fourth. She got a flyout and forceout to end the fourth. In the fifth, she retired the first two, then hit a batter. She put down the last seven to complete the shutout. She struck out five.

Lindsay Macaluso doubled leading off the first inning. She scored on Nikki Lee DiSalvio's groundout. The Yellojwckets got an unearned run in the third with pinchrunner Samantha Melvin scoring after Macaluso's bouncer was booted.

In the fourth, Kim Grimes bunted for a hit, moved to second on a sacrifice, to third on a single, and scored on M.C. Wagner's sacrifice fly. Grimes scored an unearned run in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Rochester hit three home runs in the opener. Macaluso hit a solo shot in the fourth to increase the Rochester lead to 3-0. In the fifth, Grimes tripled with one out and scored on Erin Clark's homer run to left. After a pop out, Wagner singled and scored on Skellie's home run to left center.
