Rochester's Sara Hutchinson threw a two-hit shutout in the nitecap and Ithaca's Alyssa Brook threw a three-hitter in the opener as Rochester and Ithaca split at softball doubleheader at GLC Field on Tuesday.
Both pitchers did the majority of the work in each end of the doubleheader. In Ithaca's 10-1 victory in game one, Brook allowed three hits and one earned run with no walks and seven strikeouts. Kait Dolan had three hits for the Bombers (19-9) in the opener, including a three-run home run in the second inning. Allison Greaney and Alyssa Guzman drove in two runs apiece for Ithaca in the first game. Guzman, Brittany Lillie, and Molly O'Donnell all had three hits.
Hutchinson took over for Madeline Skellie in the opener. In two innings plus, Skellie gave up five hits, five runs (four earned), walked three, and struck out two. Hutchinson allowed eight hits, five runs (one earned) with one walk and four strikeouts in the last five innings. Ithaca scored four in the second, one in the third, two in the fifth, and three in the seventh. Rochester committed six errors, leading to five Ithaca runs.
Rochester's (18-13) game one run came in the sixth with Ithaca up, 7-0. Cara Celorio singled, stole second, and scored two batters later on a groundout by Katie McLean.
In game two, Hutchinson allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out three to earn her 11th victory this season. Lillie started for Ithaca. Brook was the designated player. In four innings, she gave up four hits, walked two, and struck out two.
Lillie worked out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the first. Lindsay Macaluso and McLean singled. After Nikki Lee DiSalvio lined out, Kim Grimes walked. Lillie got Juliana Nicholson to ground to third and Macaluso was forced at home. She ended the inning by striking out Erin Clark.
Ithaca missed a chance to break through in the fourth. With one out, Lillie's line drive was dropped for an error. She stole second. Kerry Barger walked. O'Donnell grounded to short and Lillie was forced at third. Adrienne Walters pinch-ran for Barger. Jen Biondi singled to short, off Macaluso's glove. Walters took third, but was thrown out at the plate.
Celorio singled, leading off the Rochester fifth. Brook replaced Lillie. She got Macaluso on a flyout to right. McLean reached on a fielder's choice (Celorio was forced out) and promptly stole second. DiSalvio lined to right.
Rochester broke through in the sixth. Grimes struck out, but reached when the third strike was dropped. Nicholson bunted her to second. Clark struck out. Grimes took third on a wild pitch and scored on M.C. Wagner's single to right.
Hutchinson worked out of a seventh inning jam. She struck out O'Donnell, then gave up a single to Biondi. Greaney reached when Rochester dropped a force-play grounder. Hutchinson retired Annmarie Forenza on a popup to Clark and got pinch-hitter Courtney Noster on a lineout to Clark to end it.
