HAMILTON, N.Y. – Rensselaer swept a softball doubleheader from Rochester on Sunday, winning game one on a tiebreaker, and taking the nitecap with the help of five unearned runs.
The Engineers leveled their Liberty League record at 3-3 with the sweep (16-15-1 overall). RPI won the first game, 9-8, in 10 innings. Game two ended 8-3. The doubleheader was played at the Eaton Street Complex in Hamilton, N.Y. This is typically the home field for Colgate University. When the doubleheader was rained out a week ago at Rochester, the games were set for a neutral site.
Rochester finished 4-4 in the Liberty League. The Yellowjackets are 22-17 overall. Rochester, RPI, Union, and Skidmore will all take part in the Liberty League championships next weekend at Union. RPI and Skidmore will play a makeup DH in midweek. The outcome of that DH will determine final pairings for the double-elimination tournament.
Erin Clark hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning for Rochester to tie the game at 3-3. In the bottom of the third, Kim Grimes hit a two-run home run to push Rochester in front, 5-4. It was the 10th home run of the year for Grimes, one shy of matching the single-season record.
Winning pitcher Jen Bach's solo home run got RPI even at 5-5 in the fifth inning. A double, a sacrifice fly, and a single put the Engineers on top, 8-5, in the seventh.
Rochester tied it – and nearly won it outright – in its half of the seventh. Three straight walks loaded the bases. Katie McLean hit a comebacker and Samantha Melvin was forced at the plate. M.C. Wagner singled home Cara Celorio. After Grimes struck out, Clark singled, scoring Lindsay Macaluso and McLean. Clark took second on a throw home and Wagner was tagged out trying to score the winning run, ending the inning at 8-8. In the eighth inning, Juliana Nicholson hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a forceout. Melvin popped out and Celorio bounced to short.
RPI scored two unearned runs in the top of the first in the nitecap and made it 3-0 on another unearned run in the second. Rochester staged a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the margin to 3-2. Macaluso and McLean singled. Nikki Lee DiSalvio doubled Macaluso home. In the seventh, DiSalvio hit a solo home run. She finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Macaluso, McLean, and Clark each had two hits.
