Softball Ousted from LL Playoffs

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Rochester was eliminated from the Liberty League softball playoffs on Saturday when the Yellowjackets were defeated by RPI and Skidmore.

The Yellowjackets lost to RPI, 4-2, in the second semifinal in early afternoon. Skidmore then scored its run in the top of the seventh to win the elimination game, 1-0. Rochester finished 22-19.

In the RPI game, the Yellowjackets tied the score after falling behind, 2-0. In the top of the third, Nikki Lee DiSalvio walked with two out. Kim Grimes doubled to right center, moving DiSalvio to third. Erin Clark doubled to left, scoring both runners.

RPI scored twice in its half of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. In the Rochester seventh, Samantha Melvin got a pinch-hit single. Lindsay Macaluso and Katie McLean were retired on popups and DiSalvio flied to center to end the game.

Rochester wasn't able to get the big hit it needed in the game vs. Skidmore. The Yellowjackets stranded eight runners, two apiece in the fourth, sixth, and seventh. In the fourth, DiSalvio singled. Jaclyn Inglis pinch-ran, but was thrown out stealing. Grimes walked. Melvin lined out to first base. Grimes stole second and took third on McLean's single. M.C. Wagner lined out to end the inning.

In the sixth (still scoreless), Macaluso singled, chasing the Skidmore starter. DiSalvio forced her at second. Grimes singled, putting runners at first and second. Melvin bounced to short and DiSalvio was forced at third. McLean's grounder ended the inning.

Skidmore homered in the seventh to take the lead. In Rochester's half, Wagner singled. Juliana Nicholson sacrificed and both runners were safe when the Thoroughbreds couldn't get an out. Natalee Sassaman struck out, pinch-hitting for Cara Celorio. Clark flied to right. Macaluso's grounder to third forced Wagner, ending the game.

Sara Hutchinson worked all six innings of the opener. She gave up eight hits, four runs (all earned), walked one, and struck out six. In game two, Madeline Skellie got the start. She worked the first five innings, allowing six hits, no runs, no earned runs, no walks, and striking out five. Hutchinson pitched the last two innings, allowing one hit, one run (earned), no walks, and striking out two.
