FREDONIA, N.Y. – Strikers Ellen Coleman and Bridgette Varin scored goals six minutes apart in the first half to spark the University of Rochester to a 5-1 victory over Penn State-Behrend in the opening round of the Clarion Soccer Classic at SUNY Fredonia.
Coleman finished with two goals and one assist. Varin had one goal as did Brittany Huber and Kirsten Ross. Grace Van Der Ven assisted on two goals. Jayne Gavrity also had an assist.
Rochester improved to 3-1 with the win. The Yellowjackets will play Baldwin-Wallace College on Saturday. Penn State –Behrend (2-2) will play host Fredonia.
Coleman opened the scoring at 16:23, knocking home a rebound after her original shot was blocked. Varin doubled the lead at 22:08. Gavrity played a short pass into the box and Varin first-timed it home.
Early in the second half, Coleman pushed the ball out to the left where Ross scored for a 3-0 edge (47:34). The Lions pulled a goal back at 55:38. Caitlyn Elser scored with Lindsey Steinsdoerfer getting the assist.
Van Der Veen's through ball found Coleman for a 4-1 lead at 79:39. Less than a minute later, Van Der Ven sete up Huber for the final goal at 80:25.
Rochester held a 29-9 edge on shots, 17-3 in shots on goal. Bridget Lang made two saves in goal for Rochester. Robin Siegenthaler made 12 saves for Penn State Behrend and the PSU defense cleared one ball off the line.
