Despite holding a one-goal lead at halftime, UR fell to Wheaton College of Illinois, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at Fauver Stadium after the Thunder scored three goals in under 13 minutes in the second half. Wheaton's Brittany Bergh led all scorers in the game, putting in two goals in the second half to give Wheaton the lead off a corner kick in the 79th minute and then an insurance goal five minutes later off a shot from 18 yards out.
The Yellowjackets took an early lead in the first half, when senior forward Bridgette Varin put a ball past the Thunder's goalkeeper Maddie Allen after she deflected a cross played into the box by junior forward Ellen Coleman. The goal was Varin's fifth of the season – the second-best total on the team.
The Thunder outshot the Yellowjackets 24-10 on the day, but really put on the pressure in the second half, when they allowed just four UR shots while tallying 16 of their own.
Yellowjacket keeper sophomore Bridget Lang was busy in the net, making eight saves for the day. Twice she deflected the ball over the crossbar in the second half to preserve a 1-0 UR lead.
Finally, Wheaton broke through the shutout off a corner kick in the 71st minute when Katelyn Kishkunas played the ball into Jaime Orewiler, who passed it back to Kishkunas at the top of the box. Kishkunas played a ball in, and it sailed just over the head of Lang to tie the game, 1-1.
With the loss, UR falls to 5-2. Wheaton improves to 6-2. The Yellowjackets next host Rochester Institute of Technology on Sept. 23. Last year, UR fell to the Tigers, 1-2.
