Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men battle to 1-1 draw against 17th ranked Statesmen

The eighth-ranked UR men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie against the visiting seventeenth-ranked Hobart College Statesmen on Saturday night. Over 110 minutes of play, the two teams accumulated 45 total shots, 39 fouls and 18 corner kicks.

After just over 53 minutes of play, Rochester senior midfielder Steve Welles finally broke the scoreless tie, when he took a shot from the top of the box that deflected off a Hobart defender and past Statesmen goalie Charlie Hale. The goal was Welles's first of the season.

The Yellowjackets had a couple opportunities to take the lead in the first half, including a succession of three shots off a corner kick just 13 minutes into the game. After a header by defender Misha Carrel-Thomas was blocked, freshman Sars Bowman took a shot from the top of the box that was also blocked. Welles subsequent bicycle kick sailed just high, hitting the crossbar and landing out of bounce.

Hobart evened the score with just over 10 minutes to play in the game, when Justin Dotzman sent a long throw in into the box, finding the head of Ian McGarty, who scored his first goal of the season by heading the ball past UR goalie Scott Garfing.

Garfing finished the game with six saves, while Hale finished with seven.

The Statesmen also missed an opportunity early in the game to take a 1-0 lead, when Tony Yeboah took a shot from the top of the box that Garfing deflected right to Hobart's Tommy Hayes, whose subsequent put back attempt went just wide of goal.

With the tie, UR moves to 4-0-2, while Hobart moves to 3-1-1. UR's next match is this Tuesday against St. Lawrence University.
