Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

UR upsets seventh-ranked William Smith

Ellen Coleman's diving shot on a breakaway that slid into the left side of the goal in the 82nd minute proved to be the game winner as UR upset the seventh-ranked William Smith College Herons, 2-1, in an afternoon showdown at Fauver Stadium. The goal was Coleman's ninth of the season and her third game-winner.

William Smith had a couple opportunities to tie the score with under 10 minutes left, including a point blank shot from five yards out by William Smith's Jamie Sawyer that was stopped on the goal line by UR midfielder Marissa Braverman.

Rochester didn't have many chances, notching just nine shots, but it was able to finish on limited opportunities. Kirsten Ross broke the stalemate in the 56th minute, knocking in a free kick on the left side of the pitch from 25 yards out. The goal was Ross's third of the season.

UR was able to withstand Heron pressure, led by leading goal-scorer Brelynn Nasypany, for the first 75 minutes, but finally succumbed just past the 75th minute mark when Nasypany placed a cross from Heron Renee Jenson past UR goalie Bridget Lang into the top corner of the goal. The goal was Nasypany's ninth of the season.

For most of the game, however, defense was on display.

Bridget Lang's diving save in the 32nd minute off a hard-driven shot from William Smith's Chelsea England kept the score knotted at zero, and the Yellowjackets withstood a flurry of offensive pressure by the Herons at the end of the first half, including four corner kicks in the last five minutes that culminated in a near score for William Smith's Kelsey Hill in the 43rd minute. Hill headed the ball toward goal from the right post off a corner kick, but the ball was cleared off the line by a Yellowjacket defender.

With the loss, the Herons drop to 7-2-1, while UR improves to 6-2-1.
