Kirsten Ross and Bridgette Varin scored a goal apiece as Rochester claimed third place in the 2010 Women's Flower City Soccer Tournament at Edwin Fauver Stadium Sunday.
The Yellowjackets defeated Medaille College, 2-0, and improved to 2-1 overall. It was Rochester's first shutout of the young season. Medaille is 0-3.
Ross put the Yellowjackets ahead 1-0 in the 13th minute. The ball came to Ellen Coleman on right wing. She dribbled to the endline and from just outside the crease, chipped it back into the middle where Ross redirected it into the left side of the net.
With just under 10 minutes to play, Varin scored one of the most picturesque goals in recent years. Rochester was awarded a free kick along its right sideline, 10 yards over midfield. Meaghan Magee sent a long ball into the center of the box with a sea of blue shirts rushing goalward. Varin dove, met the ball perfectly, and headed it into the top right hand corner of the net.
Bridget Lang was not required to make a save in goal for Rochester. She earned her first shutout. Denay O'Connor of Medaille had seven saves. Rochester outshot the Mavericks, 27-0.
