CMU Comes Back to Beat UR 2-1

ROCHESTER, NY- Carnegie Mellon University got two goals in the second half to come from behind and beat the University of Rochester women's soccer team 2-1 on a wet and windy Friday night at Fauver Stadium.  The final score was 2-1 in favor of the Tartans (8-4-0, 2-1-0 UAA).

Nine minutes into the game, the Tartans recorded the first excellent scoring chances of the game when freshman Savina Reid centered a pass right to the foot of teammate Alex Venegas in front, but her point blank shot was stopped by Yellowjacket goalie Bridget Lang.  The rebound went to Brianna Magill who also was stopped by a diving Lang.

Rochester (8-3-0, 2-1-0 UAA) answered with a good scoring chance of their own when a chipped shot by freshman Katie Sappio was just missed by Ellen Coleman who had an open net after Tartan goalie Anna Albi chased after Sappio.  The ball was headed out of danger by a Carnegie defender.

UR got another excellent chance in the 23rd minute when Beth Martens went charging toward the net and got a head on the ball after it was popped up right to her from Coleman off a long throw in.  Albi ended up making a lunging save to keep the game scoreless.

A couple of Carnegie Mellon lobs up high in the air made for some tense moments deep in the Rochester end, but Lang came up big punching the ball away twice.  A long clear in also took a high bounce and almost caught the Rochester keeper off guard, but she was able to recover and make the save.

In the 34th minute, Rochester was able to get on the board first.  The play started when Coleman chipped the ball over a defender to freshman Ashley Hunt.  Hunt then found sophomore Grace Van der Ven who dribbled the ball and then turned and shot a pass that found Coleman who was sprinting in towards the net.  She fired a shot and found the back of the net for her eighth goal of the year, giving the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.

Her goal allowed Coleman to pull into a tie for the school career scoring lead with Alison Collins ('04) at 109 points.

Carnegie Mellon had an excellent chance to level the score in the 62nd minute when Reid ran free off a centering pass from the left wing.  She was just onside when the long pass was let go and her shot was saved by a scrambling Lang.

The Tartans were able to then get the equalizer in the 71st minute off a corner kick by Rachel Contopoulous.  Her kick into the box ended up bouncing off a Rochester defender on the far side of the net.  The deflection ended up right on the foot of freshman Madison Nagle who was there to clean up the mess and score the goal, thus making the score 1-1.

Carnegie Mellon was then able to get on top when freshman Lucy Havens was able to chip in a shot past Lang in the top left corner of the goal.  The play started when a long chip pass was sent up the middle by Cecilia Zischkau, the ball bounced once before Havens was able to get her foot on it and give CMU the 2-1 lead.

In the goals, Rochester's Lang made five saves along with Carnegie's Albi.

The two teams both play again on Sunday with Rochester hosting Emory and CMU traveling to Case Western Reserve.
