Alexis Vangellow and
Allison Beardsley scored a goal apiece as Rochester edged Houghton College, 2-1, at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Wednesday night.
Vangellow scored less than five minutes into the game and Beardsley made it 2-0 with 3:22 remaining. That turned out to be the gamewinner when Houghton's Maesa Phongsamouth scored with 2:04 on the clock.
Rochester improved to 12-6 overall. Houghton saw its seven-match winning streak snapped. The Highlanders are 9-4.
Vangellow latched onto a bad clearance for her goal. The Highlanders tried to clear the ball fromt heir own endline. Vangellow intercepted the pass and fired a shot into the low left hand corner of the net, beyond the reach of Hillery Duman at 4:48.
Phongsamouth almost leveled the score with 12:30 left in the first half. A penalty corner was played out to Jillian Watts at the top of the circle. She directed it straight ahead to Phonsamouth positioned at the low right post. Her shot was cleared away by Rochester's
Darragh Kerr.
Beardsley made a weaving run through the circle in the second half, pulled the defense towards her and shuffled a pass across the face of the goalmouth to
Shelby Hall, but Hall's shot was deflected wide for a long hit from the sideline.
With less than four minutes to play, Hall outhustled a Houghton defender to save a pass on the end line. She pushed it out at an angle to Beardsley who wristed a shot into the low right hand corner of the cage from the left side with 3:22 left.
Houghton scored off a penalty corner with 2:04 left. Hannah Zgrablich passed the ball to Ashley Engle at the top of the circle. She guided it over to Watts and Watts dumped it inside to Phongsamouth on the low right post. This time, she managed to quickly deflect it into the right corner, pulling Houghton within a goal.
Duman made four saves for the Highlanders.
Madison Wagner made two saves for Rochester.
