CHICAGO - The University of Chicago scored a goal in the final minute of regulation to tie the score, then netted the gamewinner one minute into overtime to edge Rochester, 3-2, in a men's University Athletic Association soccer match.
The victory by the Maroons, coupled with the other Sunday results, brings the UAA men's race down to the final weekend. As it stands now, Emory, Case, and Washington are all tied for first place with 12 points (4 wins, 2 losses). Rochester is fourth with 10 points (3 wins, 2 losses, 1 tie).
On Saturday, Emory will host Carnegie Mellon. Washington plays at Chicago, and Rochester plays at Case Western Reserve. So far this season, Rochester has beaten Washington in St. Louis (2-0 - last Friday) and lost to Emory at Fauver Stadium (0-1). Case beat Emory, 6-5, earlier this year and won at Washington in OT on Sunday.
Two of the five goals were scored directly off corner kicks. At 37:41,
Jakob Seidlitz lofted a corner directly into the net for a 1-0 Rochester lead. The Yellowjackets made it 2-0 barely a minute later when
Shane Dobles scored at 38:55.
Chicago pulled a goal back at 58:57 - Michael Choaquette fed Nic Lopez for the Maroon goal. In the final minute, Choquette lofted a corner that sailed into the top of the net at 89:03 to set up overtime.
In the first minute of OT, Rochester was whistled for an offsides violation. Chicago took the free kick and converted off the transition, with a short pass from Stanton Coville finding Kyle Kurfirst for the gamewinner at 91:11.
Scott Garfing made five saves in goal for Rochester and the Yellowjackets cleared one ball off the line. Elek Lane made three saves for UC and his defense cleared a ball off the line as well.
Chicago held an 11-8 edge in shots (all eight of Rochester's shots came in the first half). The Maroons had six corner kicks to five for Rochester.
The Yellowjackets ate 9-4-2 overall, 3-2-1 in the UAA. Chicago is 9-6-2, 2-4 in the UAA.
