Rochester applied an enormous amount of pressure in the second half, but visiting Nazareth College withstood the onslaught for a 1-0 win over Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Nazareth goalkeeper Abbie Carey made six saves, her defense blocked numerous shots, and the Yellowjackets hit the crossbar twice. Rochester outshot Nazareth, 15-4, in the second half, 16-8 for the game.
The Yellowjackets, who had just entered the Division III National Poll at #25, are 6-3. Nazareth is 4-2-3. The Golden Flyers are unbeaten in four straight games.
A somehwat mundane first half, dominated by tight marking and few scoring chances, turned into a number of solid chances in the second half - for each team.
Ellen Coleman broke through the Nazareth defense in the 47th minute and played the ball deeper into the box but a teammate just couldn't get to the ball in time. Nazareth moved downfield quickly and Rochester goalkeeper
Bridget Lang had to punch a long right wing cross off her line as Nazareth charged the goal.
Less than four minutes into the second half, Nazareth broke the deadlock. The Golden Flyers were awarded a free kick after a Rochester handball, 28 yards from goal on right wing. Kerry Gannon took the free kick - a line drive at goal that Lang was able to parry, diving off her line. The ball popped out and Kelly Kuhn was there to touch the rebound into the net at 48:30.
Rochester stepped up the pressure.
Rachel Wesley hit the crossbar with a shot in the 50th minute. Carey made two good saves to deny Coleman in a span of one minute. In the 65th minute, she saved the ball at the near post on a left wing blast from Coleman. A minute later, Coleman got to the right side of the box and tried to left foot the ball inside the back post but Carey got there to make the save.
Carey made a finger-tip save of a header by Coleman after a corner kick with 22 minutes left. With just over 10 minutes to play,
Katie Sappio's shot was pushed wide of the left post for a corner kick.
The Yellowjackets produced one more dizzying flurry of chances as the clock ticked below five minutes. Coleman's header struck the crossbar. The rebound came to
Jayne Gavrity and her chip from 14 yards out was palmed away by Carey. A third shot was blocked by the defense.
