RPI holds off UR 2-1 in Liberty League match

ROCHESTER, NY-  The Rochester field hockey team got a goal midway through the second half, but it wasn't enough to comeback from a two goal deficit as the Yellowjackets (8-5, 0-3 Liberty League) fell 2-1 to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Engineers on Friday afternoon.

Twenty-four minutes into the game and after a flurry of chances in front and multiple corners, RPI (6-3, 3-1 LL) got on the board first on a goal from six yards out on the left side of the net by Kelsey Porter, her first of the year.  RPI was moving the ball around the circle with nice crisp passes to set up the tally; the assist was credited to Holly DuPuis.

The Yellowjackets fired five shots (four on net) in the first half, RPI had eight shots (seven on net).

Rochester's Shelby Hall had a point blank chance early in the second half but her chance was turned away by RPI goalie Briana Earle.  Earle made five total saves for the Engineers.

RPI then doubled the lead in the 39th minute when Liana Viaggio dribbled her way past multiple Rochester defenders on the left side and beat UR goalie Madison Wagner.

Fourteen minutes into the second half, the Yellowjackets were able to cut the deficit in half when off a penalty corner by Alexis Vangellow, Hall settled the ball and fed it over to Megan Keil.  Keil then found the back of the net from 14 yards out to make the score 2-1 in RPI's favor.  The goal was Keil's fourth of the year with Vangellow and Hall each recording their fourth assists.

With just over seven minutes remaining, Hall had another point blank chance off a centering pass from Vangellow, but the junior just missed the net wide after a scramble in front.

In net for UR Wagner made 11 saves.

Rochester next plays against Vassar College on Saturday in a home game at 2 pm.
