ROCHESTER, NY- The University of Rochester field hockey team earned their first Liberty League victory with a 3-1 win over Vassar College on Saturday afternoon. UR used three first half goals to put the Brewers away early.
A chance early came for the Yellowjackets (9-5, 1-3 Liberty League) in the 5th minute of the game when
Alexis Vangellow took a penalty corner and eventually got it back for a shot that just skimmed the left post. Rochester seemed to spend most of the few minutes in the Vassar scoring zone.
UR got on the board first almost ten minutes in when another penalty corner led to
Allison Beardsley settling the ball about 10 yards out. Her shot was then deflected in by
Anna Dobrzynski for a 1-0 Yellowjacket lead. The goal was Dobrzynski's team leading 15th on the season.
The Rochester lead then doubled off another penalty corner, this time it was Vangellow tipping in a hard shot from 14 yards out by
Shelby Hall.
Rochester got on the board again off a scramble in front of the Vassar net 27 minutes in. An original shot by Beardsley was stopped by the defense, but the rebound went right to the stick of
Katie Flaschner who promptly found the back of the net to make the score 3-0 heading into halftime.
Early in the second half, Vassar (5-6, 1-3 LL) had its best scoring chance of the game up to that point when Emily Maier got loose in front and tested goalie
Madison Wagner for the first time in the game. Wagner came up big with a kick save to stop the Brewer rally.
Vassar goalie Maggie Brelis kept the Brewers in the game midway through the second half coming up big with seven solid saves over a 10 minute span.
Very late in the game, Vassar got on the board with Maier finding the back of the net with only seven seconds remaining. The goal was scored when a ball got loose in the circle and Maier found it and knocked the shot home. The goal was her third on the season.
In the goals, Wagner made one save for UR, Brelis ended with 10 saves, all in the second half.
Rochester next plays at Ithaca College on 10/12.
