FAUVER STADIUM – With contributions across the board – and two second half goals – the University of Rochester men's soccer team defeated Calvin College (Mich.), 3-1, in the season opener for both teams.
The Yellowjackets used goals from three different players to rally for the win.
Josh Richards scored the equalizer for Rochester at 8:56, knocking the ball home from a yard off the line in a goalmouth scramble.
Tom Sorrentino set up the two second half goals for the Yellowjackets.
Less than six minutes into the second half, Rochester earned a throw-in along the right sideline. Sorrentino threw it into the center of the box.
Max Eberhardt flicked it into the middle and
Max Fan headed it into the left corner of the goal at 50:23.
The Yellowjackets counterattacked for what turned out to be the clinching goal at 78:48. Sorrentino directed the ball from the right sideline to
Alex Swanger on the right endline. He pushed it into the middle and
Scott Zorn cracked a rising shot under the crossbar from less than 10 yards out. Two minutes earlier, Rochester's
Braden Adcock put the ball in front from left wing and Swanger, shielded by Calvin's Lawrence Murray, couldn't get a toe to it to push it into the goal.
Calvin sent waves of attackers on goal and came close a number of times. With just under 20 minutes left in the first half, Murray hit a free kick into the box and Brad Heethius headed it just past the post.
Once the score turned in Rochester's favor with the Fan goal, Calvin focused its energy. Joe Broekhuizen hit the right post in the 59th minute and the Yellowjackets scrambled the ball away to the sidelines. Midway through the second half, Travis Veater shot from a crowd in the goalmouth and Rochester goalkeeper
Scott Garfing made a save at the low right post. Garfing finished with five saves. Michael Dolan had one save for Calvin and Colago cleared a ball off the line less than 15 minutes into the match.
A minute later, Dino Duratovic centered the ball and Rochester back
Jakob Seidlitz steered it away from the middle.
Colago put the Knights (0-1) ahead after four minutes, diving to head home a corner kick from Kyle Vela. That came at the end of a flurry of Calvin corner kicks, set up when Broekhuizen got to a loose ball in the fourth minute and whistled a shot on net that Garfing parried for a corner kick.
