'Jackets Nipped in OT in Liberty Opener

CANTON, N.Y. - Rochester fought back from one goal deficits twice in the second half against St. Lawrence University on Friday afternoon before the Saints won, 5-4, on a shootout. In the tiebreaker, SLU goaltender Nicole Matos saved three of Rochester's four shots.

The Yellowjackets are 6-2 overall, 0-1 in the Liberty League. Rochester plays at fifth-ranked Skidmore College on Saturday.

During regulation and OT, the teams combined for 68 shots, 44 of those on goal. Rochester held a slim 35-33 edge in shots. Matos made 19 saves, nine of those in the first half. Madison Wagner made 17 saves for Rochester, nine of those in the second half.

Goals by Megan Keil and Anna Dobrzynski six minutes apart midway through the first half put Rochester up, 2-1. Emily Riley scored for the Saints at 4:31, but Keil equalized (from Shelby Hall) at 14:07. Allison Beardsley's rebound was tucked in by Dobrzynski at 19:58 to put Rochester ahead.

Riley set up Erika Swits at 25:05, then scored off a pass from Ashley Ferenczy three minutes later and the Saints led, 3-2, at the break.

Beardsley's pass found Hall for the 3-3 equalizer at 39:05. Ferenczy weaved her way through the defense to push the hosts in front, 4-3, at 46:12. At 56:03, Beardsley earned her third assist, this one setting up Dobrzynski to tip it over the SLU goalie and knot the score at 4-4.

In the tiebreaker, Matos saved shots by Beardsley and Dobrzynski while Riley and Swits scored for the Saints. Lindsey Randall scored for Rochester (1-2 SLU). Courtney Cartier scored for the Saints for a 3-1 lead through three rounds. When Matos stopped Darragh Kerr on the first shot of the fourth round, the win was secured for the hosts.
