Tom Sorrentino and
Max Fan scored 20 minutes apart in the second half as Rochester defeated St. John Fisher, 2-0, at Edwin Fauver Stadium. It was the fourth win in the last five games for the Yellowjackets (6-2).
Sorrentino's accurate throw-ins this year have created havoc in the opposing penalty area. On Tuesday, he was at the receiving end. The Yellowjackets earned a throw along the right sideline, 30 yards off the end line. As teammates flooded the Fisher penalty area,
Jarvis D'Souza lofted the ball inside the crease. Sorrentino outjumped two defenders and Fisher goalkeeper Kyle Metcalfe to direct the ball into the top left corner of the goal at 63:07.
With less than seven minutes to play,
Andrew Sheridan chipped a ball from left wing to the top of the penalty area. Fan redirected it inside the left post at 83:52.
Fisher had the two best chances of a scoreless first half. With under seven minutes left, Stefan John played the ball to Tim Bach on left wing but Sorrentino hustled over and broke up the play. John had a role in Fisher's other opportunity. He cut to the top of the area and cut the ball back for Connor Julien whose shot skipped past the left post.
Early in the second half, some miscommunication in the back led to an open goal but Fisher's Austin Buckley couldn't capitalize. Three minutes before the Sorrentino goal, Matt Silvi of Fisher collected the ball on left wing and fired a 25-yard shot that went just over the crossbar.
Scott Garfing made two saves for the shutout for Rochester. Metcalfe had one save for Fisher (3-6).
